Compostable Straws and Utensils for Redondo Beach

Redondo Beach bans plastic straws, and that includes PLA and other "compostable plastic" straws. The city's rules cover straws, stirrers, and utensils made of plastic, which the code defines to include compostable and bio based polymers such as PLA. Businesses need straws and utensils made from paper, pasta, sugar cane, wood, or bamboo. What Redondo Beach requires

  • The law: Municipal Code Chapter 5-10, which phased in, with the straw rules in effect since 2021.
  • What is banned: straws, stirrers, and utensils made of plastic, which the code defines to include compostable and bio based polymers such as PLA.
  • What is allowed: paper, pasta, sugar cane, wood, or bamboo.
  • On request only: compliant straws and utensils may only be given when a customer asks for them.
  • Accessibility: like most straw laws, it still allows a plastic straw for a customer with a disability who asks for one. That exception is narrow; it does not let a business keep stocking PLA straws for everyone.
